Established in 1981 and opened in 1983 in the basement of the Medici Villa “La Ferdinanda”, thanks to the synergy between the Comune di Carmignano and Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Toscana, the Archaeological Museum aims to illustrate the history of the Etruscan town of Artimino and its territory through the finds made in the course of fifty years of research.
Since the “Orientalising” era of the Etruscan civilisation (seventh century BC) this area has, seen the emergence of C.), the centre of Artimino, as a result of an extraordinary economic and cultural development: this phase of strong growth is undoubtedly due to the availability of fertile land, but especially to the strategic geographical location, at the confluence of the Ombrone Pistoiese and Bisenzio and Arno, controlling trade routes that connected Etruria proper with Padanian Etruria and other regions located at the north and east of the Apennines.
Since spring 2011, the Museum has been at the village of Artimino (entrance from Piazza San Carlo), in the space of the former fermenting room, as a result of the need for more display space and logistical adjustments. The museum was named after the archaeologist and former superintendent “Francesco Nicosia”, one of the architects who discovered  Etruscan Carmignano.
