The Golden Roster

It’s been eighty years from the first Feast, but only 42 parades and 45 races have taken place since then. In fact there had been a long
interruption because of the war, from 1939 to 1956. There were other halts due to listlessness and debates about victories that weren’t considered legitimate: from 1958 to 1963 and from 1975 to 1979. There had also been years in which the parade and the race took place but the trophies weren’t given out or, as happened in the nineties when the feast took place with participation of only three districts.
In many years the dominant colour in the book of gold of the Feast of San Michele has undoubtedly been blue. The “Arcangelo” district has won on 22 out of 42 occasions, including the 1964 edition in which there was only one trophy (and won by The Greens, for the most points scored in the race of donkeys), but the leaders of the parade were The Blues. Right after the blue team come The Whites with 11 victories followed by The Greens with 8, 7 of which between 1987 and 1995, the year of their last victory, then The Yellows with only two victories – in 1969 and in 1971.
The positions are reversed in the Palio of donkeys. The first are The Yellows with 15 Palio out of 45, the second – Whites with 13, the third – Blue with 11 and the last – Greens with 6 victories. The Greens also won the race of donkeys last year. (Wf)
